From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Mar 22, 2007 at 10:42:43

Welcome to the blog. Your performance patterns so far show you could use some base building. Probably 6 miles a day 6 days a week would be a good start. Easy pace. No need for speedwork, you've got plenty to run a 4:40 mile without touching the track. If you are not running 4:40 mile or anywhere close, it means you are lacking base.

My team finished 5th overall in this 10 man relay. The finish line was messed up! they had a arrow pointing toward the finish line that I started running to while in 2nd place, but they extended it because the lead guy went the wrong way. A guy passed me near the very end, but he wouldn't have passed me if we went the way the arrow was pointing (the right way). I got 3rd dang it! Atleast I beat Dixie Colleges #1 runner, and Nikki Johnson's boyfriend. The course was about 1200 meters plus the extension they decided to add. I ran it in 4.09. If I would have ran the way the arrow was pointing I would have run a 3.53. My Dad and I tested the extension and it was about a 16 second add on.

Track is really weird right now. I doesn't seem like anyone is really trying that hard. The whole Cappy taking control of the mile/800 guys has to do with a lot of it I'm sure. He expects a lot out of us but the workouts he gives us aren't very smart, and he never really seems to pay attention if we really do it. He also tells us how us distance guys are failures, and that we couldn't do anything else in track. I guess this is how Cappy inspires by telling us we suck.

We ran a pyramid today 400,800,1600,800,400. It was hot for the first time this track season.

Runners get no respect! No one besides our own running brothers and a few very very select others really gets what we do or what we are really all about. I'm not saying Cappi is totally like this but I don't know what to think of him sometimes. He is like Ghandi or someone like that in his own way, sometimes I really have to think about what he is saying to understand him. Just run your hardest and things will be cool!

From Dave Holt on Wed, Apr 25, 2007 at 09:50:43

Saying Cappy is like Ghandi! Wow, Jeff, I don't know if I would go there.

Josh, I know things are strange right now, just do your best and think of greater rewards than the praise of someone else.

From tyler on Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 14:52:25

haha jeff called him ghandi!? no offense to cappy but i think he the farthest from ghandi. i mean he has alot of inspiring talks but he saves those for the sprinters. i dont know why but i since he has tried telling the distance that they are good but they need to step it up has not worked maybe since this is his last year he has decided to say screw it and call us all losers. i know it sucks but like coach said we can only endure it and hope that in a few weeks we can start training longer distances again.

From Jeff on Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 19:34:01

GOOD GHANDI

What I meant was you have to think about what he says sometimes to try and get what he means. There are quotes by people (like ghandi) that you think about and it means different stuff. I agree with you guys about Cappy. I guess I just tell myself he is trying to say something else after he says weird things. i messed up

From Ruth on Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 19:49:54

Good job on your 400's. It's hard to do repeats when you're not doing them with everybody, but your times were all right, Way to go!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Apr 30, 2007 at 23:57:46

Did you do any warm-up or cooldown? Make sure when you do speed, it does not come at the expense of mileage. You already have plenty of speed, what kills you is the lack of aerobic endurance. Then you'll see the first one in 67, then 66, 65, 65,65, and 63 in a workout like this. And in the mile you'll be running 4:20-4:30 instead of struggling to break 5:10.

From Dave Holt on Tue, May 01, 2007 at 09:41:12

What Sasha said is very important. I know it is tougher to get those miles in with the new coaching arrangement, but you HAVE to. And now you can start bringing it down a little as we peak for the season, but continue building for next.

If you take a break, you will for sure not be ready for Wasatch! And, really, there is not much to take a break from if you have not had a run of at least 6 miles in a couple of months. Your break has already happened! It is time to get serious about running if you plan to succeed. You have a lot of potential that is currently being wasted by training sporadically. I believe had you been training properly, your 10 K times would have been around 32:00-33:00, maybe even faster. Instead of having Ruth nearly beat you in the mile, you would be one of the top runners in the state and that among boys!

I recommend you start by having no days that are less than 5 miles - 6 days a week, no skipping or excuses. Once this feels comfortable, make it 6. Keep increasing it until you can do 10 miles a day 6 days a week. Then find a 10 K race - you will be surprised.

We ran for 30 minutes up the mountain, I started out with my dad but was having problems with my calves then Willy passed me up. I turned around with Willy after 30 minutes of up hill. Then we ran downhill all the way back. I was hauling and left Willy on the downhill.

I ran the first 3/12 miles with Ally, and RJ. We we were far behind my dad, Ruth, Zac, and Willy wasn't too far ahead. At the park Ally, Zac, Willy, and RJ took a breather but I didn't and finished the rest of the run a lot faster. Willy pushed at the end.

I had a horrible race, its that plain and simple. I felt sick and was way sore and I just suck at running. I can't even beat a girl or a 47 year old man with a torn miniscus. I am real mad at myself right now, to describe how I feel I am going to "quote" a part of a Sir Elton John song: "I think I'm going to kill myself, cause a little suicide". Thats pretty much how I feel. The only thing getting me through my depression right now is the Suns shorts, jersey, and Jerome Bettis shorts I got from my bro in the Phillippines. Jessica Alba is also helping me get through the hard times, cause she's so hot!

I'm just kidding about all the depression stuff, life is good! I'm not going to let one bad race take me down.

Sorry that you feel that bad about me beating you... but still not enough to always let you win. *wink* Really though, running those back to back races is tough business and you really owned yesterday, so you did awesome keeping your time as fast as it was today. Keep pushing it - and I don't think you're fat... just so you know.

Running is like that, man. You ran two hard races in a row. You going to have ups and downs. And all those other cliques. All you can do is just keep running and put some great miles in this summer. Really, you are starting at a very different point than many people because of your lack of miles in the spring (but we won't go into the reasons for that!). Just run baby!

This weekend is going to be a blast. Wasatch attack!!

Race: Wasatch Back Relay (3.6 Miles) 00:23:17
Total Distance
3.60

Leg 10- Our Team started at 3:00 PM. The six in the first van ran a lot slower than we thought they would. I guess the heat really sucked to run in. I started my leg at 9:12 PM. It started getting dark throughout my run, and I was feeling alright but I kept relaxed because I didn't want to run too hard for on my first leg. I got confused at the end on where to go, and the headlights of the oncoming cars were blinding me.  My run time was: 23:17.

Our Team Was:

Van 1: Paul Zabriskie (Coach),  Alex Baker, Zac Zabriskie, Adam Forsyth, Alex Busenbark, Eric Goold, and Jeff Frodsham.

Van 2: Ross Decker (Coach), RJ Smith, Aaron Montague, Steve Ott, Myself, Austin Smith, and Willy Heinrich.

Leg 22- After eating, watching my friends chase a skunk, and sleeping for about 45 mins. I was ready for my 2nd leg. I thought it was going to be 6.4 miles, but I heard that someone who had their Garmin had it at about 6.8 miles. I started this run at 4:19 AM. Steve O. ran his whole leg with some kid, so I tried keeping up with his brother during the beginning of my run but he was a lot faster than the kid Steve ran with so I let him go. During the run I was alone a lot of the time, and it was dark and scary. I probably passed 4 people and got passed by 2. I rolled my ankle at one point and it was starting to hurt al little, but I just stayed relaxed and finished the run. Run Time: 45:30.

Leg 34 (RAGNAR)- I wasn't even going to run ragnar, but about 3 weeks ago Aaron and I decided to switch places because I was in better shape. 12:17 PM- I got the "slap stick baton" from Steve and was real motivated to not walk and run real smart. I was running with my dad and he gave me awesome advice! Every .8 miles I would get water from my truck that I would pour all over my body to keep me cool (it really helped). About 2 1/2 miles into "Ragnar" I walked for about 15 seconds than kept running. I kept my strides real short to straighten out my back and whenever there was a flat part I ran fast in a relaxed way. I walked a little with about half a mile to go. I finished real strong when I saw the exhange zone. I passed about 18 people on Ragnar mainly because a lot of them were walking. Run Time: 44:48

LATER:

Everyone in my truck(vehicle 1) started to run with Willy with about 800 meters to the finish line. With about 300 meters to go everyone in vehicle 2 joined the group and all 12 of us ran to the finish line it was AWESOME! We got our medals and celebrated! We are definitely coming back next year! Our Finish time was: 22:59:59

What does that tell me? It is time to be RACING with those guys. This summer is the key to getting there. Keep RUNNING a lot of miles and you are going to break out!

At the 2 mile marker Steve, and Zac started to turn around so Monty and I did the same. Baker, Willy, Ruth, and Holt kept on going. It was starting to get hot by the time I turned around so I was glad I only ran 4. Overall it was a pretty good run. Run time: 29:30

With about 2 miles left to go we saw Papa and little Willy coming the opposite way to do the loop. It was sort of a race but not really. Willy, Jeff, RJ, and Austin Smith are all in my stake and they ran it too. Willy kept saying he was going to kill me in this run, but come race day and he didn't even really race it. I ran with my dad the whole way we ran out to a NO TRESPASSING sign and back. I think I crossed the flag pole(finish line) before my dad but we might have tied. So I got a bead for winning this "Fun Run".

Later this day there was a Triathilon: Swimming, Running, and Canoeing. My dad did the swim leg in which he crushed in. He handed off to Conner Murdock and Conner ran about 100 meters along the shore. He handed off to me and I ran about 370 meters and handed off to Mr. Christensen(Tennis Coach at PV) who handed off to Cody Hintze. Cody ran about 50 meters and handed off to the people in the Canoe and they finished the Triathilon for us. The next team was about 30 seconds behind us. I started off running with Baker, Ott, Monty, and this other kid, but later dropped back with Lusk, Ruth, and Fre. Ruth picked it up and left us then I left Lusk and Fre and ran by myself the rest of the run with Ruth in front of me by a ways. It was a 4.6 mile run.

What is really strange about your "basketball" entry from yesterday is that the rest of us still had practice. hmmmm.... interesting. I played B-ball with all my Cousins and my team was a dynasty! My brother and I were hitting 3's like the Phoenix Suns. After b-ball we were driving back to our cabin and I told my dad to drop me off about 3 miles from the cabin. I ran pretty hard all the way back and was pretty proud of my time, considering I had just played b-ball for 2 1/2 hours.

This morning I went on a run with 2 of my uncles, 3 cousins, and my dad. My dad and I started out with all of them and later left them to get a good run in. We ran on this trail that took us 3 miles down some really steep downhill, which meant turning around and running back was going to suck! It really did suck to run 3 miles out, it was really, really steep. I endured it though. It took forever to run up hill.

Total Distance

I woke up at about 7:10 and got up and drank some water, and went back to bed until 7:45. I ran down to the high school from my house which is about 1.1 miles. The XC workout was the Sunrise/Foremaster run, as I like to call it. I started out with Wood, RJ, and Baker, and they all had a lot of ground on me after 1 1/2 miles. Wood kept on going to do the Chuck-a-Rama run. I caught Baker at the top of the sunrise hill, he was dying. I was behind RJ by about 30 seconds for a long while. I caught up to and passed RJ with about a mile to go. I finished pretty strong considering the heat! It was a really good "rebound" run from my last race. It was one of my best runs of the summer.

7.2 miles:  53.15=7.23/mile

Afternoon Practice- I ran down to the high school from my house again, I count this mile in my overall distances because I usually run it pretty fast. For the "2  1/2 mile middle school run" I ran with coach pretty much the whole time. He taught me how to correct my form, so I can keep working on it. I was getting dehydrated by the minute during this run, but still ran a decent relaxed run. I walked half of the mile home and ran the last. Distance for this run: 1 mile down to school + 2  1/2 run + half mile run home= 4 miles.

I ran down to the high school again to see how my legs were feeling, they were tired. I lead the stretches because I was the most veteran runner there, it was pretty cool. We ran to the Sunrise hill and ran 4 of those hills. Than I ran home from the hills, and I was way, way tired.

Hill 1:  1.58, Hill 2:  1.51, Hill 3:  1.48, Hill 4:  1.44             Total Distance about 4.5 miles.

Afternoon Run-  Ran down to high school, stretched and warmed up. As a team we ran to Artic Circle and back, on the way back I stopped at the bank and got a drink. I was dehydrated again. I walked most of the way home, but ran about .3 back to my house.

The heat really got to me today, hard! I ran from my house to the school and I was already feeling that today was going to suck. For our 800 meter warm-up I was already dying! Than we went out to do the Chuck-a-Rama run and I started out decent, but as I kept running the worse and more sick I felt. I was having stomach problems too and that wasn't helping at all. I cut the run short by running to my house instead of back to the school, but still got about 4.1 miles in.

I am excited to do the Wasatch Rendevous race though, if I am still on varsity by then.

The original plan was that I was going run from mile 11 back to mile 9 by myself on the Half-Marathon course, and run from 9 to the end of the half-Marathon with my dad. This would get me a total of 6 miles. Well the race started late and that really screwed things up. I ran from mile 11 to mile 9 with Mike Schram. He got tired of waiting at mile 9, and later so did I so I ran to the mile 8 marker and Mike was there too. We waited a while for any runners to come by. Clyde, Holt, were the first to run by. A little later Dustin Ence ran by, then a little later Ryan Newman. Finally my dad came running to the 8 mile marker. I took off with him and Mike stayed to wait for his wife. So I had already ran 3 miles before I met up with my dad to run the last 5.

This was the weirdest race I have ran all season. There were parts were I was having a way fast race and others where I was dead. I didn't know what the course was at all! All of our boys teams did real well, its very exciting!

I thought I was finishing the race when I really wasn't. so I started kicking it to the finish line then I saw that I had a big loop left and I died. Everyone that I passed up during my kick to the not finish passed me back up. Later I go pissed and passed up a lot of people and finished strong. I think if i didn't pick up it so much on the wrong loop I would have ran about a 19.50 min race, because I would have paced myself better and I wouldn't have died. I am WAY excited for my next race and to be running with such a close JV team. My dad said that there was a 17 second spread between are top 8 JV runners. I know that I will a part of that next race.

TODAY WAS MY BIRTHDAY!

I ran to the school in the morning, and ran close behind Zac for the 3 miler acrtic cirlce run. I pushed really hard pretty much the whole time. Run time: 27.14

Afternoon Run- Pyramid Day, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1000, 800, 600. I wasn't feeling good at all even when we did are 2 mile warm up. I was feeling sick to my stomach and my tendon was hurting bad. For the first part of the pyramid I let pain enter my mind too much, for the last couple I got mad and kicked it. Holt talked to me about certain things and now I am really focused on what I need to do.

600: 2.08, 800: 3.03, 1000: 3.33, 1200: 5.12, 1000: 3.14, 800: 2.45, 600: 2.03

It was a crazy hilly race but seemed short by alittle bit. I ran a lot better today than I have in the last couple of races. It was cool that I could run this well with no stretching before and being sore from the weeks workouts. WE took 1st and Trevor Thompson, Kory Kimzey, Eric Goold and Z all finished in the top 10.

I got to the 2 1/2 turn around point and bent down to tie my shoe and I saw Jeff running up so I ran with him for most of the 7.8 miles. We saw 2 Deer rib cages and 2 Deer hydes and other crap on the run as we got to the desert after running over washington parkway. Dumb Hunters! They should take all that crap out furher so no one has to smell it. This was a good beginning run to get me back in shape.

I have 4 goals that I want to achieve before New Years:

1. Run under 40 minutes in the Phoenix 10k(Turkey Trot)

2. Lose weight!
